INTERNATIONAL DO COURSE (IDC) AMSTERDAM 2019 REPORT

The 2nd International Do Course (IDC) took place in the 11th & 12th May 2019, in the beautiful city of Amsterdam, Netherlands. The venue was located in the Sporthallen Zuid, a modern sport hall situated right next to the famous 1928 Olympic Stadium of Amsterdam.

The highly anticipated seminar brought together participants from Costa Rica, Guatemala, Argentina, England, Belgium and Finland/Italy. ITFNL was represented by members from 10 different clubs from all around the Netherlands. Professor Janel Gauthier, Master Joliette Trân and Master Andreu Martínez captured our attentions from the very beginning and kept that attention in their experienced hands until the very last moment of the week-end.

Thanks to the relatively small number of participants, those who were present got to enjoy an intimate seminar atmosphere. Because we were a small group, we had a rare opportunity to receive personal teaching from our ITF Do Committee instructors. Throughout the course, Professor Gauthier, Master Trân and Master Martínez were able to focus on each individual's needs. This is rarely possible in large international seminars. The teaching during this IDC was tailored to the needs of each individual present and all of us were able to communicate with ease and without a rush with our instructors. So even if we were small in number, the seminar was grandiose. It was an event that nobody should’ve missed out.

This historical IDC was a seminar that so far hasn’t been organised in this scale: as a fully official, independent and self standing ITF seminar. Thanks to the years of relentless efforts of ITFNL president, Sabum Robert Boer, the IDC was finally brought to the Netherlands. For the first time in the history of the ITF, we had the whole weekend dedicated to IDC. And all of those who were present were able to feel that we were making something very special for our Taekwon-Do. Just by being there, the IDC was making a difference.

To underline the uniqueness of this new seminar and the importance of the project, the newly elected President of the ITF, Grandmaster Paul Weiler, was present on both days. The President’s presence was to show his support towards the work of the ITF Do Committee and to acknowledge the efforts the organisers, the ITFNL. Also Grandmaster Lan Ung was present, the grandmaster that we all know to be a big, beloved and inspiring teacher of Do. And of course the head of the largest club in the Netherlands, our newly nominated first grandmaster of the I.T.F. Nederland, the Grandmaster of Dutch Do, James Tjin A Ton, was present.

The seminar concentrated especially on the tenets of Taekwon-Do: courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self-control and indomitable spirit. Through the tenets of Taekwon-Do, the topic continued to the Taekwon-Do Moral Culture and to Taekwon-Do as a way of life. Also the Taekwon-Do Oath was in an important role throughout the seminar.

The instructors guided us to discuss in detail about every tenet. They showed us how it was possible to use them in our training, teaching, competing and everyday life. As theoretic as the topic was, the instructors didn’t fail to put them into practice in a down to earth and easily understandable way. Step by step all tenets were put in use. We were using easily comprehensible methods that practitioners from beginners to grandmasters were able to follow and apply in and out the dojang. The methods were put to use so that even the most experienced ones felt that they were getting challenged. Our instructors showed us how the practise of Do can help a beginner to travel through the long and hard road to become a champion. Do can help our athletes not only to become champions but champions that will not be forgotten, champions that will inspire others.

All three instructors coordinated their work amongst themselves in a way that it was clear that this seminar could only have been realised after a careful preparation. It was obvious that this seminar has required years and years of hard work and dedication. All three instructors with the lead of Professor Gauthier completed each other in a seamless way which made one think they would’ve performed together for years. The obvious harmony between each instructor made it possible that we were all able to grasp the complexities of our tenets in detail, without wasting time on unnecessary repetition, extended pauses or contradicting presentations.

The lively personalities of the instructors made sure that our focus and attention lasted throughout the seminar days. The constant little changes in what we were doing during different parts of the seminar, made it easy for us to keep learning without the loss of concentration. Especially during the first day, the mix of theory and physical exercise, made the learning easy for all. On the second day the participants were particularly challenged to take part in the conversations and to work in small groups. The instructors encourage the participants to bring out their own thoughts, opinions and ideas and this again helped us to stay receptive and to put the learning into practice.

The encouraged dialogue between the instructors and the participants surely made it possible that in the future those who took part in this seminar, will be able to put the Do into practice independently. The work we did in small groups further enhanced our learning. The seminar was all about helping us to grasp the concept of Do ourselves, on our own. It wasn’t about mimicking the instructors or repeating the words of others. It was about learning how to think independently, about going home with your very own Do toolbox. The teaching methods that were used surely have been carefully selected so that we can remember all that was learned also in the future.

After IDC Amsterdam, the Do Committee continue their teaching in Oulu, Finland. The seminars have been coordinated between the two organisers so that it was possible for both countries to enjoy this course. From behalf of IDC Amsterdam 2019 and I.T.F. Nederland we wish a successful weekend to all of those who will take part in the Oulu IDC! You will have a great time!

May the Do be strong with you.

Yours in Taekwon-Do,
Helena Hanhikangas

3RD INTERNATIONAL DO COURSE - OULU, FINLAND - DAY 1 REPORT

The first day of the 3rd International Do Course in Oulu, Finland has ended and the course has already been a massive success. With almost 100 participants, this is the biggest Do event ever organized according to the Chair of the ITF Do Committee, Dr. Janel Gauthier, 6th Degree. The course was organized by the local school Taekwon-Do Akatemia in conjunction with International Taekwon-Do Federation and ITF Taekwon-Do Finland.

The first day of the course, conducted by Dr. Gauthier and Master Joliette Trân, 7th Degree, focused on recognizing the Do and the tenets of Taekwon-Do and understanding what they mean. This goal was achieved by combining short lectures with typical Taekwon-Do exercises such as patterns, sparring and pre-arranged sparring and discussing the role of the tenets in them.

The first day, which was open to all students from yellow belt upwards, was received very well by the participants. It provoked a lot of discussion, new realizations, fresh ideas, and most importantly, happy faces.

The Do and the moral culture of our martial art are the glue that hold our practitioners together and help create a unified Taekwon-Do family. To further improve this sense of unity, on Day 2, which is open from red belt upwards, the participants will learn how to teach the Do to their students in their own dojang.

We are lucky to have Master Andreu Martínez, 7th Degree, join Dr. Gauthier and Master Trân to conduct the Day 2. After such a strong presentation today, the participants' expectations are extremely high for the second day of the course.

Yours in Taekwon-Do,

Mr Henri Savilampi

Teaching and sharing our passion: a privilege and a real pleasure!

Joliette Trân, Andreu Martínez and Dr. Janel Gauthier had a great weekend in Amsterdam. They met with interesting, interesting and committed participants in their learning. People from the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, England, Argentina, Costa Rica, Guatemala.

The most beautiful gift received by the trainers, participants who testify that these " Concepts Apply every day in the dojang, courtesy - integrity - perseverance - self-control - courage help to get through our training. We become more persevering in our journey in the taekwon-do and we become better instructors. In addition, these values help us in our life: daily hassle and great personal events ".

We would like to highlight the participation of gm Paul Weiler, GM Lan Ung and GM James Tjin A Ton for their support, and above all to be a model for all of us, that even 9th degree, they are still learning , are open and listening to what every instructor brings.

Self-Control: the control of our thoughts allows us to be attentive: to enjoy every moment with conscience and appreciate the extraordinary people around us.

Thank you very much to our guests and to the organizing committee ITF Nederland, Robert Boer, Hellu Hanhikangas Malaika Mccarthy Jair Stenhuijs Wouter Meijer
